Steve King compares gardening to slavery on June 16th

Steve King has a long history of bigoted and racist remarks. The former Republican congressman from Iowa added to that record Tuesday when he shared his thoughts on June 16 and reproductive rights.

King equated a day of gardening with slavery to conclude he would rather be a slave than be aborted.

“I spent the whole day of June 16 in the hot sun hoeing and pulling weeds and thinking about what it would have been like to have been a slave,” King said tweeted. “At the end of the day I thought about what it would be like to be an aborted baby. I need to see the sunrise and the sunset.”

It seems likely that King intended to get people to troll him by sharing a sentiment most would find deeply offensive. Even someone who once defended white supremacy should realize that a single day’s work on the farm is in no way like slavery.

The tweet appears to coincide with two important events.

Monday marked the first time the United States recognized June 16 as a federal holiday. June 16 marks the anniversary of the day slaves learned of their emancipation in Galveston, Texas.

King’s comments also came on a day when many were expecting the United States Supreme Court to fall Roe v. calf, which granted reproductive freedom in America. The court did not announce its decision in this case.

Negative feedback rolled in the moment King hit the publish button. Many called he racist.

Though King is notorious for making biased comments, many found the cruelty of that particular sentiment unsettling.

“Man, what’s the matter with you,” one wrote.

“That’s a very mean perspective, sir.” added @blobtower.

Some suggested that King’s tweet was indicative of the direction Republican politics has been taking in recent years.

“I remember when this white supremacist was one of the worst Republicans, maybe the worst. Now he’s just 08/15.” commented @TUSK81.

Most people just trolled him.

“I see Steve has been worse off since he left office.” wrote one.

“Want to see the worst tweet ever?” said @Noellenarwhal.
