It’s a change from last year when the title of supreme champion went to Pieminister’s gluten-free Mooless Pie.

The baking got underway in Britain’s unofficial pie capital of Leicestershire on Wednesday, as 908 bakers from pubs, restaurants and other establishments served up fillings of marmite-and-cheese, kebabs and lasagne.

As well as attracting a record number of cakes and pastries, the awards organizers recruited judges from major retailers including Selfridges and Tesco to work alongside chefs and cake experts.

After a strong year for vegan cakes in 2022, the category fell to the fifth-largest spot among this year’s entries.

Awards Chair Matthew O’Callaghan said: “We are always very encouraged to see the nation’s love of cake at these annual awards and this year there has been a tremendous amount of excitement and creativity.

“On Wednesday we had the pleasure of enjoying some spectacular pies and Brockleby’s Pies overcame an exceptionally stiff competition not only for best tart savory pie but triumphed over all entries to be crowned top champion.

“These awards recognize the skills of British cake makers across the country so I would like to give Brockleby’s a special congratulations on this huge achievement.”
