State and local leaders dedicate Weymouth Bridge to officer killed in the line of duty, first responders – Boston News, Weather, Sports

WEYMOUTH, MASS. (WHDH) – Leaders met in Weymouth on Saturday to honor an officer killed in the line of duty in 2018 and to dedicate the town’s Route 18 Bridge to him.

Sergeant Michael Chesna was shot dead with his own gun by a man fleeing police in July 2018. State Senator Patrick O’Connor (R) introduced a bill in 2021 to rename the bridge at the request of Chesna’s family.

“Four and a half years ago, following Mike’s unthinkable death, the community of Weymouth made a commitment that we would never forget his sacrifice and that we would always be there to support his family,” O’Connor said.

Governor Charlie Baker, who signed the law into law, thanked the city for selecting Chesna for the honor.

“I just want to say how grateful we are that you made the decision never to forget and honor someone like Sergeant Chesna,” Baker said, “who stands for him and represents him through his military service and his community, that.” very best in all of us.”

Chesna became a police officer after her military service. Lt. gov. Karyn Polito said his commitment to the service was heroic and that Weymouth’s continued tribute to him also recognizes the duty and sacrifice of all first responders.

“Michael Chesna was a hero,” said Polito. “And he was one of those people who was just born for this kind of work. And with the support of his family, he was able to do two missions for this country. By honoring him, we honor them all and those who have chosen this profession.”

Chesna’s mother said she was grateful for all the support the family had received, noting that the location of the bridge was a nod to her son’s ministry.

“We have had love and support throughout this arduous journey for the past four and a half years, and I don’t think any of us would be where we are today without them,” said Mimi Chesna, the late Sergeant’s mother. “We miss him, we love him and we hope every person who is a first responder stays safe that no other family has to go through this. And this bridge is not only a direct shot to the hospital, but also to the police station.”
