Flying is often exciting, whether for business or pleasure, but there is no shortage of rules and requirements. You need to think about Transportation Security Administration (TSA) processes and baggage restrictions, all in addition to simply making your flight on time. But American Airlines is now updating one of its policies, finally allowing passengers to do something they haven’t been able to do in years. American made headlines earlier this month when it announced a big change. According to a Sept. 20 press release, the airline is introducing the Flagship Suite, which is its new premium business class seating arrangement on its long-haul fleet.
However, as a result, in 2023 the airline will be eliminating its flagship first seating, which will be offered on two of the few aircraft variants that still have three cabins. American was the last US airline to offer a true first class experience, as others eliminated this area to make room for a larger business class.
And that’s not the only update American Airlines has up its sleeve, according to a new announcement. You will soon be able to enjoy a different dining experience while flying.
Let’s face it, airplane food isn’t always the most appetizing. You may have images of curds or gummy chicken sandwiches in your mind, but American Airlines is working to improve the dining experience on its planes.
From October 12, the airline will again only offer pre-ordered meals before your flights. The ability to select these exclusive meals, which are not available as part of the regular inflight menu, has been suspended during the pandemic, an airline spokesman confirmed via email. These are intended to offer passengers more choices, which can be reserved before departure.
If you pre-order an entree, you can do so in Flagship First or Flagship Business class 30 days before your flight and up to 24 hours before departure.

Previously, a popular pre-order option was a charcuterie board, which many are hoping will return, according to View from the Wing. But while you might be pining for the return of the meat and cheese platter, American Airlines has confirmed that something else is in store.
Also beginning Oct. 12, American is introducing a new wellness menu for premium cabin passengers on select domestic, transcontinental, long-haul Hawaiian and international routes, the spokesperson confirmed best life.
In addition to the existing entrees, Premium passengers have a choice of three new dishes, including a mushroom and asparagus frittata for breakfast. For lunch and dinner, you can choose a bowl of harvested vegetables and grains or a dish of golden roasted chicken. A “dip duo” will also be served as an appetizer for pre-ordered spa lunch and dinner appetizers for premium passengers, The Points Guy reported.
Which premium passengers this applies to has not been confirmed, but according to the airline’s website, premium cabins include Flagship First and Flagship Business on international and transcontinental flights; First on domestic flights; business on international short-haul flights; and Premium Economy on select long-haul international travel and to Hawaii and Alaska.
The wellness meals were developed in conjunction with the airline’s culinary partner, the James Beard Foundation, and a nutritionist Ellie Kriegerper The Points Guy, and if the new health-focused menu proves a success, the airline plans to keep it going.
“If customers like the items and they are popular, we would like to continue providing them with opportunities to enjoy,” a spokesperson told View from the Wing.
