Starbucks teen barista runs himself through the store in Viral TikTok

A teenage Starbucks barista who found herself working the closing shift on TikTok went viral, prompting conversations about inadequate pay and labor laws.

TikToker @ jenn.ys posted a videotapes this week during her shift at the Starbucks inside Target. In it, she explained that her manager had been fired and that all her colleagues were sick. Her video was posted 4 days ago, so far has reached more than 40,000 views.

“The work of three people and I only get paid as one,” the video’s subtitle reads.

In the comments, @jenn.ys added that she’s “barely trained.”

Some commenters questioned whether it was legal for the bartender, 17, to work alone.

“I don’t think this is okay or allowed,” one user wrote. “She’s a minor and not a manager.”

TikToker lives in Oregon, where there is no law requiring adult supervision of food service staff. In one next video, @jenn.ys adds that she’s not technically alone — Target employees and senior management are also working in the building. But she still had to work at the Starbucks by herself because of the lack of a team leader and her co-workers.

Many commenters pointed out that @jenn.ys — and service workers in general — are underpaid and overworked.

“They should pay 3x for 3x work,” wrote one commenter.

“You are all willing to do too much for your work,” wrote another user. “That’s part of the reason why the company doesn’t want to walk above all of us.”

@jenn.ys explains in the comments that she can’t quit because she has bills to pay. However, she is currently applying for a new job.

Last year, as businesses began to reopen after the pandemic closed, food service workers around the country went viral because of the post. “Nobody wants to work” sign in their storefront. They protested against staff shortages and unmanageable wages. Now, with the omicron variant popping up across the country, service staff are protesting unsafe conditions and inadequate pay.

The Daily Dot has reached out to @jenn.ys via TikTok and Target via email.
