Stacking garbage cooks on the streets of St. Louis in summer temperatures

ST. LOUIS – Garbage is piling up around St. Louis residents. Many say it’s trashier than ever.

You can imagine the heat adding to the problem and increasing the odor.

“The smell hits you as soon as you open that door,” said Ben Jones of north St. Louis.

He says the garbage is piling up everywhere.

“Something has to be done because this is getting out of hand,” Jones said. “It’s not from local residents here. It’s people driving by looking for a place to unload and then they dump and then they’re gone.”

Another woman said the illegal dumpers were getting bolder.

“It’s not even night anymore,” she said. “It’s all day and they’re just going to dump and dump and nothing gets done.”

Residents say they reached out to the Citizen Services Office (314-622-4800) for help, but nothing was ever done.

“They say, ‘We’re going to get someone down there. We’ll have a truck come and take a look,’” the woman said, but it only leads to a drive-by tour of the area.

In a May 25 press conference, the St. Louis Waste Department told residents that help was on the way, though about 10 drivers were short at the time.

“Most of the time they say they’re going to send someone out, and then you look for them, wait for them, and within an hour you know nobody’s coming,” Jones said.

The city says it’s working to catch up on staff while taking a more strategic approach. It now tracks locations with the most litter to focus on those areas while bringing back recycling and adding hundreds of surveillance cameras to catch illegal dumpers.

St. Louis City Councilors complained two weeks later during a June 9 board meeting that their response wasn’t good enough.

“This is the worst garbage disposal I’ve seen in all the 31 years I’ve served the City of St. Louis,” said Councilwoman Sharon Tyus (Ward 1). “I’ll go out and drive a garbage truck myself.”

Tyus was joined by several other councilmen who feared St. Louis may never catch up.
