St. Louis doctor accused of sexually abusing South Carolina teens

CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCBD) – Authorities say a doctor and former substitute teacher in the Charleston, South Carolina area has been arrested in connection with a 2018 sexual assault of a teenager.

Robert Dewayne Williams was arrested Wednesday by the US Marshals Service in Jefferson County, Alabama, according to Andrew Knapp, a spokesman for the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office.

Charleston County detectives began investigating April 4, 2022, after the victim reported the sexual assault in May 2018.

“In 2018, Williams had tutored the victim, a 14-year-old boy, after they met when Williams was a substitute teacher at the teen’s high school,” Knapp said. “The victim, now 18, told deputies he was attacked by Williams after they watched a movie together at a movie theater.”

According to an affidavit, after the film, Williams allegedly drove to an undisclosed location in West Ashley, where he parked the car and showed the teen “various ways to check his pulse.”

It is also alleged Williams then put his hands down the teenager’s pants and engaged in unwanted sexual activity.

Detectives say Williams served as a substitute teacher at various elementary, middle and high schools in Charleston County and Berkeley County from 2017 to 2018.

“He was a medical student at the Medical University of South Carolina at the time,” says Knapp. He also worked as a pediatric resident at a hospital in St. Louis, Mo.

Williams is charged with second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor aged 11 to 14. He’s awaiting extradition to Charleston County.

Anyone with information about Williams that may be relevant to the investigation is asked to call the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office at 843-743-7200 and ask to be put through to a detective.
