St Kevin’s Old Boys Top 25 since 2000: Mitch Brown, Tom Jok, SKOB

There’s no shortage of stars who have come through St. Kevin’s Old Boys. We rank the top 25 SKOB players in the VAFA since 2000. HAVE YOUR MESSAGE

Who has been the best VAFA player for St Kevin’s Old Boys since the turn of the century?

The proud VAFA club, known to all as SKOB, boasts a bevy of ex-AFL players who have represented the club since 2000.

Mark Jamar (Melbourne/Essendon) and Jay Schulz (Port Adelaide/Richmond) are among them, but it’s former West Coast Eagle Mitch Brown who has arguably reached the greatest heights from the former pro ranks during his time at SKOB.

Brown joined the club in late 2016 after nearly 100 games on the west coast but was unknown to at least one future team-mate during his first training session at SKOB.

“Sam Cameron was his name and he played under 19,” Brown said.

“I got a kick out of him in my first session and he asked me if I was going to try to play on the ones this year or just settle for the reserves.

“I said something like, ‘I could try to crack the one.’

“Then training started and Shannon Grant was the trainer at the time and introduced me to everyone and Sam said ‘oh s…'”

When told he was number 1 on our list, Brown replied with a laugh:

“I certainly don’t think I’m number 1, but I’ll take it.”

“I just really took my time at SKOB to heart and it was a great time.

“I’ve never had Premiership success at AFL level or at juniors, so 2017 and 2018 (when we won back-to-back Premierships) was really special.

“I ended up playing OK Footy because I loved playing with the guys down there and I’m having so much fun.

Brown said his time at SKOB was the perfect end to his days as a player.

“That’s not to say I didn’t love my time in the AFL with the Eagles, but with professional football it can feel like a business at times,” Brown said

“I’ve also had a lot of injuries so I loved my time with the Eagles but at VAFA you don’t worry about getting paid you just rock on a Saturday with guys who love to play football.

“My love of football was always there but I think it helped me end my football life with that love of the game.”

Former bomber Tom Jok and former Port Adelaide shooter Steven Salopek have also played in several premierships at SKOB, while current senior coach and 278-player Anthony Lynch tops the list.

Here are our top 25 since 2000.
