A ‘hero’ father has died after rescuing a group of children from a sudden current off the coast of Wales.

Hywel Morgan, 47, helped rescue the children who got into trouble in the sea at Poppit Sands near the village of St Dogmaels.

The tragic events happened on Friday evening when a tidal wave hit several people on the beach.

Mr Morgan, who was from the area, was recovered from the sea but was not rescued by the emergency services.

Two children were taken to hospital for evaluation after the incident.

Mr Morgan’s loved ones briefly paid tribute to the “devoted and loving father,” known to family and friends as Hyw.

“Hyw was a hero. Despite our pain and sorrow, we are comforted that he selflessly tried to prevent others from losing their lives,” they said.

‘Hyw was a selfless person who always gave his time for others. He was a devoted and loving father and was loved and respected by all who knew him.

“As a family, we would like time to grieve now and would ask for privacy to do so.”
