St. Charles Teen will represent USA at the 2023 Cricket World Cup

ST. CHARLES, Mo. — Some in the St. Louis area may not know much about the game of cricket anymore, but 16-year-old Ritu Singh has made it his mission to promote the sport.

“When they see me play they say, ‘Do you play lacrosse or croquet?’ And I say, ‘No, it’s cricket,’ said Singh.

Raised in St. Charles, Singh began playing cricket when he was just six years old. She has honed her skills over the years with her father as a practice partner.

“We used to go to this baseball field and there used to be this huge tree right in the middle. Every time I hit, I wanted to hit that tree. It’s like I’m in a completely different zone, focused on one thing and one thing only,” Singh said.

With very few girls’ leagues, Singh joined a recreational men’s league at the age of nine. She was so good that by the age of 12 she was playing in more advanced competitions.

“When I saw that I was only 12 and all the other men were a lot older, the fact that I can play under them and have a bit of competition, I started to realize that I could make a career out of this sport, den I love,” Singh said.

This confidence in her game began to show as she began to progress through the US cricket trials. And finally to the US U19 national team.

This January, Singh will be one of 15 US players who will represent the country in the upcoming season U19 Women’s ICC Cricket World Cup in South Africa. It is Team USA’s first appearance at a Women’s Cricket World Cup.

“I’ve been playing it for so long and I’m very invested in the sport so it means a lot to me to come here,” said Singh.

As cricket continues to grow in popularity in the United States, Ritu says there’s much more room for growth locally. And hopes to be one of the faces of that growth.

“It was just my dream. To help the USA win the World Cup,” said Singh. “Maybe not this year. Maybe not in two years. But I know I want to be there for the first USA win.”
