Spirit Airlines guests ship bags for $35 instead of paying $150

A user on TikTok has gone viral after sharing his budget travel hack: shipping your luggage.

In a video with over 1.5 million views, TikTok user Faith (@gouldstandard) claims that checking a bag on Spirit Airlines would cost her $150. In contrast, just shipping their luggage to their destination costs only $34.33.

“The rest fits in my backpack,” she writes in the caption.

Spirit Airlines is a low-cost airline based in the United States. While it offers cheap flights, it makes up for these low fees in other areas, such as baggage fees.

If Faith chose to carry a carry-on bag at the time of ticket purchase, it would likely cost her $57 each way. If she didn’t buy a carry-on but her backpack was found to be oversized at the gate, she had to pay nearly $100 each way, according to the airline’s baggage calculator.

However, shipping the luggage is not a perfect solution. While lost luggage issues still plague the industry when travel resumes, there is a chance that clothing and other shipped items could also be lost or delayed.

While inspecting a bag almost guarantees your bag will be there when you arrive, there’s no such promise when it comes to shipping — meaning travelers may be bagless for several days while waiting for their package to arrive.

As one commenter put it, “…it takes 5 days to get there by ground service. You can’t get it for $33 overnight.”

It should be noted that travelers don’t need to worry about having an address to send their package to, as many hotels are happy to accept packages and store them for a small fee.

Back in the TikTok comments section, many users claimed they used this hack in the past.

“As a former corporate event coordinator, it’s always cheaper to send your items to your hotel or destination this way,” wrote one user.

“I always thought this was the way to go,” added another. “You don’t have to wait for it at the other end and less to continue the travel day too!”

“So many people come into my store and do this, I’m right by MIA airport,” claimed a third. “Save a lot when you come back with a bunch of new stuff!”
