Spike Lee and Denzel Washington are skipping the Oscars for Knicks-Lakers
Los Angeles was a busy place for major events on Sunday night, with the 2023 Oscars taking center stage for many at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood. In downtown LA, however, the Lakers were simultaneously hosting the New York Knicks at Crypto.com Arena, creating a conflict of interest for the many stars of the silver screen who frequent the courtside seats at Laker games.
Most of Hollywood’s biggest stars went to the Oscars, with the exception of two big names from the movie world who happily chose to dress up on Oscars night and drop by to see the Knicks-Lakers while Denzel Washington and Spike Lee sat on the sidelines.
On a night when neither man was nominated for anything, there was no reason for them to choose the Oscars over their beloved Lakers or Knicks. Washington is a regular at Lakers games, while Lee is the most famous Knicks fan in the world, so it wasn’t exactly a surprise that they were there, but it was quite remarkable on a night when most of their peers were elsewhere in the city were.
It’s especially hard to blame them for choosing an NBA game in comfortable clothes over the Oscars in a tuxedo, especially considering we only get a meaningful curtsey late in the season about once every decade. Get Lakers game. LA wanted to return to .500 in the season with a win and move the Wolves and Mavs to 7th in the west, while the Knicks could move the Nets to fifth in the east with a win Sunday night.
