Speed limits on the red, orange, blue, green and Mattapan lines remain in place amid inspections – Boston News, Weather, Sports

BOSTON (WHDH) – MBTA is advising riders to allow for additional travel time and longer service times on the Red, Orange, Blue, Green and Mattapan lines this week as MBTA engineers continue to conduct repair validations and speed checks following a Department of Public Affairs facility visit last week.

Drivers are encouraged to use T’s Trip Planner tool at mbta.com/trip-planner for a list of travel options, including bus routes that run parallel to the subway service.

On Friday, the T replaced the global red, blue and orange line speed limits with targeted block speed limits of between 10 and 25 mph in areas that had yet to be inspected or where track conditions did not permit normal speeds. The Green Line and Mattapan Line remain subject to a 10-25 mph global speed restriction while inspections continue.

“We understand drivers are frustrated and we thank them for their patience while we work hard to deliver the reliable system they expect and deserve,” MBTA Interim General Manager Jeffrey Gonneville said in a statement. “The decision to implement these speed restrictions was made because the safety of our drivers and employees is our top priority. We will continue to update drivers as we develop a timeline for completing this work and returning to a more normal schedule.”

Block speed limits of 10 to 25 mph remain in place on the heavy subway lines.
