Spectacular drone show recreates Star Trek and SpongeBob SquarePants 600 feet in the sky

HOLLYWOOD descended on Worcestershire last night with 600 drones – Britain’s biggest ever drone light show – which lit up the night sky with images of Star Trek, Paw Patrol and SpongeBob SquarePants.

Created by the team behind the drone show at Buckingham Palace’s Platinum Party, it featured colorful scenes and characters from Mission: Impossible, Scream and Halo over the village of Hollywood, near Birmingham.

The nine-minute show flew at 600 feet above the ground, bringing the glamor of Hollywood, Los Angeles, more than 5,000 miles away, to its West Midlands namesake to celebrate the launch of new streaming service PARAMOUNTPLUS.

The sensational show by drone lightshow company SKYMAGIC got off to an exciting start with the famous Mission: Impossible countdown clock.

The drones painted the black sky with an eerie giant image of Ghostface from the famous Scream movies, followed by a stunning recreation of the Yellowstone ranch house and an intergalactic visit from Star Trek’s USS Enterprise.

Next up was a trip to Bikini Bottom, where SpongeBob SquarePants himself devoured the night, followed by Paw Patrol main character Chase.

Halo’s hero, Master Chief, along with South Park’s famous Kenny, excelled in drama.

The show’s penultimate scene featured the famous Paramount mountain and logo, as well as a QR code that viewers could scan for a free seven-day trial of the streaming service.

SKYMAGIC, which wowed the world with its 400-drone performance featuring a giant corgi, a cup of tea and a teapot and the Queen’s handbag over Buckingham Palace, has spent months creating the carefully choreographed performance with a crew of just four to plan.

SKYMAGIC co-founder and director Mungo Denison said: “It has taken months to refine this show due to the level of attention to detail that is required to faithfully portray the various characters we portray.

“None of the characters were easy to create. Star Trek was challenging as it requires a lot of dynamic movement to create the feel of the iconic starship in hyperspace. It’s a huge image – it’s almost 200 meters wide.

“Star Trek obviously has a legion of die-hard fans, so getting it right and creating something that speaks to those who have never seen it before is just as important as those who love it dearly.

“The sky is our largest canvas and the show, which ran parallel to the music, began with Paramount’s famous logo, which at 200 meters wide and 120 meters high is the widest in the exhibit. They are all iconic images.

“Paramount is a fantastic client to work for. It’s a fun and iconic creative. Half the work is getting the audience’s attention because people are so familiar with these wonderful characters.

“It’s a privilege to do things like SpongeBob SquarePants and take it 200 meters up in the sky. It’s the only time my kids have been remotely impressed with anything I do.

“We’re giving the characters a sense of reality that we hope will evoke that real emotional response.

“Animals like Chase the dog from Paw Patrol are great to design because they are dynamic and you can achieve those dynamic movements.

“Everything starts with pencil and crayons and a piece of paper on which we draw everything by hand. Lastly we overlay the color file. We are able to produce 16 million colors.

“It was fantastic to bring Hollywood to Bromsgrove from Buckingham Palace and all the pomp and circumstance. We lit up the night there.”

Also present at the show was the face of new streaming service Paramount Pete, who handed out popcorn, cotton candy and balloons to residents as they watched the mesmerizing spectacle.

Ahead of the show, Paramount+ unveiled its all-star promo featuring a galaxy of Hollywood stars including Uma Thurman, Jack Whitehall, Naomie Harris, Christina Ricci and Miranda Cosgrove.

The two-minute short, filmed in the UK, follows the story of the first day of work for an intern named Paramount Pete who is trying to get hundreds of coffee orders direct from Paramount+ Studios for various superstars.

Paramount+, available now in the UK and Ireland, will include exclusive originals, blockbuster films from Paramount Pictures and a wide selection of its most iconic shows – including HALO, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, The First Lady and children’s films. Favorites Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years and PAW Patrol: The Movie.
