“And I don’t believe these maps, or the ones presented in the House, are certainly not maps of congressional districts – it’s just pure political hoax and it’s, according to In my opinion, does not serve this agency or the state well,” said Representative Jim Townsend.

Democrats objected, saying the process was fair and that the redistricting maps were based on the recommendations of an independent redistricting committee.

“This redistribution is a fair redistricting process and that’s what we’ve called it a fair redistricting process,” said Representative Patricia Roybal Caballero. “It’s not meant to be self-serving. It’s not meant to be self-advocating, it’s not meant to secure any of our elections.”

The redistricting process occurs only every 10 years to redraw the state’s legislative and congressional districts based on new census data. Governor sign a new congressional map into the Friday law.

During the special session, legislators also adopted maps for the House and House districts counties of the state Board of Public Education.

Besides maps, this session is also about money. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham tasked legislators with spending $1.1 billion in federal COVID-19 relief — after New Mexico Supreme Court ruled she must not touch it. Lawmakers passed spending bill $478 million of that money.

All lawmakers will return to the Roundhouse in January when the regular 30-day legislative session begins.
