A 50p collectible has been released by the Royal Mint to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the NHS.

All proceeds from the sale of each coin will be donated to NHS Charities Together, an organization that supports NHS staff, patients and communities.

The Royal Mint estimates this amount could be as high as £225,000.

Designed by Alice Lediard, a senior designer at the Royal Mint, the 50p collector’s denomination was one of the first 50p coins to feature King Charles on the head side of the coin.

The reverse design includes words that reflect the country’s gratitude to the NHS and its staff, such as ‘dedication’, ‘support’ and ’empathy’.

It also uses a similar angled font to that of the NHS.

Ms Lediard said: “I am honored that my design has been chosen for a 50p coin to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the NHS.”

“Like most of the nation, I have a deep pride and appreciation for the NHS.”

“Both my partner and closest friends are NHS workers and have worked on the front lines during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“The beating heart of the NHS is the staff who work for it. So I wanted to make sure the words grabbed everyone, conveyed a positive outlook and encapsulated decades of healthcare for the British public in a personal way that everyone can understand.’

This is the first time the NHS 50p coin has been offered for sale by the mint as a single coin rather than as part of the set.

Rebecca Morgan, Director of Collectors Services at the Royal Mint, said: “The Royal Mint is delighted to announce that all net proceeds from the sale of the single NHS 50p coin will be donated to NHS Charities Together to help fund that To support and continue incredible work they do every day.

“The Royal Mint is committed to producing products that celebrate and commemorate the UK’s most influential people, organizations and institutions and the NHS has played a central role in British society, supporting millions of people every day.”

“As one of the UK’s most respected and admired institutions, all of us at the Royal Mint have great appreciation for the work and difference that former and current NHS staff have made and continue to make.”

“It is a privilege to be involved in the celebration and celebration of the 75th anniversary of the NHS with an official UK 50p coin.”

Ellie Orton, chief executive of NHS Charities Together, said: “NHS charities have been supporting the NHS for 75 years and the help we provide has never been more important.”

“We are here for anyone who wants to give back to the NHS and we are very grateful to the Royal Mint for donating the proceeds from this new coin to our charity.” Together we can help the NHS do this, for its staff and patients to do even more and ensure that everyone has access to the best possible healthcare.”

The Royal Mint has celebrated previous milestones in the history of the NHS with official British coins over the decades, with a 50p coin being introduced in 1998 to celebrate 50 years of the NHS.

In 2020, the Mint, along with other organizations, pledged to support the NHS during the Covid-19 pandemic, producing 1.9 million medical visors for NHS workers.

The NHS 75th Anniversary 50p coin is available on the Royal Mint’s website, with prices starting at £11.
