South St. Paul rallies past Austin to go undefeated in men’s basketball – Twin Cities


South St. Paul maintained his undefeated season, coming in from behind to beat Austin 64-61 at the Rochester Hoops Challenge on Saturday.

Senior Devin Newsome scored 23 points, including one and one to help secure the win, while also adding 11 rebounds and five assists. Alonzo Dodd scored 12 goals for the Packers (11-0).

Buai Dopp leads Austin (4-6) with 13 points. Jack Lang got 12 points.

Cretin-Derham Hall 81, North St. Paul 71: Tre Holloman scored 29 goals to power Cretin-Derham Hall (3-5) in a win over North St. Paul (1-7). Donavhan Cain adds 16, and Charlie Plum adds 14 to the Raiders.

Jevon Jackson of North St. Paul went up against Holloman with the highest 29 points in the game. Casanova Edwards and Nino Johnson each scored 12 points.

Other points: Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City beat Washington 98-72; Rosemount beat Northfield 68-51; Shakopee defeated Eden Prairie with a score of 83-64.

Women’s basketball

Como Park 74, Austin 69: Ronnie Porter’s 24 points gave Como Park a 5-point win over Austin at the Rochester Hoops Challenge. Jada James added 17 points for the Cougars.

The match continued throughout, with Como Park leading by one point in the second half. Como Park struggled to stop Hope Dudycha, who had a top performance of the match of 26.

Other points: Stillwater beat Woodbury 67-15; Rochester John Marshall beat Lakeville North 56-48; Foley beat Central 75-41; Simley beat New Life Academy 46-24.

Men’s hockey

The Academy of St. Thomas 3, Mahtomedi 1: A pair of goals in the last four minutes pushed the Cadets past Mahtomedi.

St. Thomas Academy (8-5-0) scored three goals without equalizing, including goals from Zach Howard and Tommy Cronin in the weakening moments of the game. Howard’s power-use goal proved to be the match winner before Cronin scored another insurance goal two minutes later. Carter Haycraft scores the only goal for Mahtomedi (6-6-1).

Rosemount 2, Eastview 0: Jake Peterson equalized goalless two minutes into the third half and Owen Hendrikson scored another less than two minutes later to seal the Rosemount victory (6-5-0).

Wall Pasch saved 24 shots in the knockout of Eastview (8-3-0). Both of Ireland’s goals were played by power play.

Other points: Certin-Derham Hall beat Roseville 11-0; Forest Lake beat East Ridge 5-2; Tartan beat Two Rivers 3-0; Simley beat Johnson 7-1.

Women’s hockey

Apple Valley 6, Farmington 2: The third half with three goals brought the Eagles victory over Farmington (6-9-0) at home.

Down 2-2 in the closing minutes of the second half, Faith Dougan scored the second goal of the game to put the Eagles ahead in the final half. Then, a quick 61-second mid-third half secured victory for Apple Valley (8-7-1) scoring three goals to take a 6-2 lead.
