Snapchat rushes to shut down ‘public heatmap’ in Ukraine to stop Russians spying on civilians and troops

SNAPCHAT reduces its features and advertising in support of Ukraine.

The company issued a March 1 press release that read, “War is a scourge of our collective humanity and, in this case, a direct threat to many of our team members and their families.”

Snapchat has suspended the “heat map” feature within the borders of Ukraine.

The heat map tool is used to show users the volume of snaps sent from a place.

As thousands of Ukrainian citizens and troops move, evacuate, and mobilize, the heat map poses unnecessary risk by showing their location.

Because of this, Snapchat made the decision to shut it down.

Reporting from The Verge notes that many other real-time population mapping tools have also been suspended.

This includes live traffic forecasts from Google Maps and Apple Maps.

Snapchat has stopped advertising in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine, while Russian and Belarusian companies are not allowed to buy ad space on Snapchat.

The press release insists that Snapchat “[does] not accept income from Russian state enterprises”.

Snapchat’s stock value has fallen dramatically over the past year.
