Smelly tap water? Recent heavy rains have caused problems near St. Louis

FLORISSANT, Mo. – Have you noticed a change in the taste or smell of the tap water? A Facebook post from the city of Florissant says Missouri American Water is working on this issue. It seems that high flow levels affect taste.

The water supplier adds some carbon to improve the taste. The extent of the problem is not clear at this time. The clue map doesn’t seem to list the smelly water issue.

“St. Louis – Due to recent heavy rains, associated change in spring water characteristics and water treatment, customers may experience a taste and smell that is commonly described as earthy, metallic or chemical tasting,” tweeted American Missouri Water. “Treatment measures are being taken to minimize these conditions. Please note that there are no health risks. Our continuous testing confirms that safe drinking water standards are being met. Their water is expected to be back to normal by June 10th.”

The water can also look a bit cloudy. This comes from air bubbles floating in the liquid. They should settle down when the water has stood for a while.
