Sky Broadband today launches Gigafast as the “fastest internet ever” – but there’s a big catch

SKY has launched its fastest broadband package to date, with speeds around 25 times faster than the cheapest offering.

With the new Sky Broadband Gigafast offer you get a whopping 900 Mbit/s (megabits per second).

That’s extremely fast: well above the national average.

According to Ofcom’s 2021 report, home broadband speeds in the UK are typically around 50Mbps.

But it’s not cheap: you’ll have to pay £55 a month to get the ultra-fast speeds.

However, it’s still less than Virgin Media’s very similar (and slightly faster) Gig1 fiber broadband package, which costs £62 a month.

Thankfully, Sky offers a 600Mbps speed guarantee.

If your speed falls below this level, you can reclaim a subscription for a month.

Upload speeds are expected to average around 90Mbps.

According to Sky, the new package is aimed at busy households where several people use many devices for intensive activities.

“Sky Broadband Gigafast offers WiFi-hungry households the ability to connect many devices at the same time,” said Sky’s Aman Bhatti.

Aman described the speeds as “groundbreaking”.

And he said they’re up to 25 times faster than a standard Sky connection – which translates to around 36 Mb/s.

According to Sky, you can connect over 120 devices at the same time.

Here’s what Sky’s current offering looks like in terms of average speeds on offer:

  • Super fast 35 – 36 Mbit/s
  • Super fast – 59Mbps
  • Ultra Fast – 145Mbps
  • Ultra-fast plus – 500 Mbit/s
  • Gigafast – 900Mbps

The catch is that it’s an all-fiber package, so you’ll only get the speeds if you live somewhere on the property with fiber-optic broadband.

Sky told The Sun that FTTP covers around 20% of people across the UK.

The new Gigafast package is also available with the add-on Sky Broadband Boost.

It’s a £5 a month package that guarantees you minimum speeds plus WiFi coverage in every room.

Sky Gigafast costs £55 a month for an 18-month contract, with a £10 activation fee.

The new package is available from today at the same price for new and existing customers.

At 900 Mbps, you can download an HD TV show in four or five seconds.

But those speeds might be excessive for some customers, so consider a cheaper package if you’re not in a high-usage household.
