Sketch’s new room has been unveiled – and there’s no pink in sight

The new Sketch dining room has been unveiled and there's not a pink in sight

Mayfair Restaurant Sketch is known not only for its food but also for its decor, with its iconic pink gallery room providing the backdrop for thousands of Instagram photo shoots.

But the influencers and thirst-quenchers who flock there will have to adjust to a new setting after a remodel completely transformed the dining room.

Before the change, the walls and ceiling were painted a marshmallow pink, with matching velvet banquettes and bucket chairs that contrast with the neutral chevron floor.

Artwork by David Shrigley lined the walls, which were moodily lit by Art Deco-style golden lanterns and pink table candles.

Now, however, not a drop of pink is in sight.

The transformation was overseen by Iranian-French architect India Mahdavi, who also designed the original pink interior (the was originally going to be changed after two years but was retained in 2014 after being such a hit).

Gone are the pastel-colored furniture and candy-colored illustrations, replaced by shiny copper walls that reflect the light and make the space appear brighter and larger. A bronze shade behind the bar adds an extra touch of elegance.

British-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare CBE has created 14 artworks for the restaurant and the work of African creatives has been exhibited throughout.

The seating is upholstered in yellow plush fabric by Senegalese artist Aissa Dione, while the wall lights are made by Ghanaian weavers working with artisan Inès Bressand.

Gallery chef Pierre Gagnaire has also added a new dish to the hotspot’s menu, Yinka Rice. Inspired by the popular West African dish Jollof rice, it is prepared with a flavorful tomato and soy sauce and fried plantains.

A similar “Homage” dish didn’t do very well for Jamie Oliver back then, so we’re eagerly awaiting your reviews of this dish.

Yinka Shonibare said her work included in the new makeover was inspired by Pablo Picasso’s collection.

She added: “Once Matisse Picasso showed African art for the first time, it changed the history of modern art.

“Picasso was interested in appropriating art from another culture and I am also appropriating from European ethnic art. Cultural appropriation cannot be a one-way street.”

Even though you can no longer get your millennial pink fix from Sketch, you won’t be short of beautiful art and sophisticated elegance.

If anything, it’s now a race to post the new bright and sunny gallery space before it becomes as ubiquitous as the pink one.
