San Diego: A six-year-old boy allegedly shot and injured a teacher at Richneck Elementary School in Newport News, Va., police said, sparking consternation from local officials, who vowed to find answers and prevent a break-in such event repeated.
The teacher’s injury, a woman in her 30s, was considered life-threatening, although she had shown some improvement in hospital, Police Chief Steve Drew told reporters.
There was no other explanation for how a six-year-old got the gun. Police described it as an “argument” in the first grade classroom, which resulted in a gunshot being fired.
“It wasn’t an accidental shooting,” Drew said, later adding, “I want to know where that gun came from.”
The boy was in custody, Drew said.
No students were injured. They were moved to a gym for their safety and counselors were made available, Drew said.
“They’re safe. They interact with the officers and have fun, give a few high-fives and tease each other,” Drew said.
The students were reunited with their parents under a school escort, Drew said.
