Short shines again as Vics extend Shield’s lead against WA

An aggressive half-century from Matt Short has seen Victoria secure a manageable lead over Western Australia as they look to secure a place in next week’s Sheffield Shield final.

Victoria moved up to 8-295 at tea on day two, extending her lead at the WACA to 173 after the hosts were sacked for just 122.

Fast bowling pair Mitch Perry (16no) and Scott Boland (0no) are at the wicket.

The in-form short cracked 82 balls from just 95, with his quick goals helping the Vics in their hunt for bonus points that come into play if they draw level with Queensland in the standings.

Short, dropped to 47, and Campbell Kellaway (64) combined for a score of 112 for the fourth wicket, the game’s largest to date.

Earlier, opener Marcus Harris got the Vics off to a solid start at 84.

Part-time bowler Hilton Cartwright was the unlikely star for the home side, returning 3-14.

Western Australia, who top the rankings, are already certain they will host the season decider in this week’s finals to decide which of Queensland or Victoria takes the other spot.
