Shocking moment as a racer crashes into a 90-year-old King’s Gate in Regent’s Park

A SHOCKING video on Instagram shows an illegal drag race in Regents Park turning ugly.

In what looks like a race between a BMW 4 Series and a Nissan Skyline, the BMW quickly veers off the road and crashes into the old gates.

Judging by the design of the gates, the illegal race takes place on Chester Road, which connects the park’s Inner Circle Roads and Outer Circle Roads.

Within the inner circle are the Queen Mary’s Rose Gardens, which have two sets of ornate gates at their entrances.

These are Grade I listed and were donated by Sigimund Goetze, a wealthy and successful artist who lived in Grove House (now Nuffield House) on the northern edge of the park from 1909 to 1939.

They were presented by King George V in 1932 to celebrate the silver jubilee.

In the video, which was uploaded last year but resurfaced this week, the cars can be seen speeding along Chester Road towards the park’s inner circle.

As the Nissan slows down, it seems like the BMW doesn’t have the same stopping power or just can’t judge the corner.

Despite the driver’s effort and the comical use of the turn signal, the car simply understeers over the pavement ahead and crashes into the gate with much tire squeal.

Various onlookers cannot believe what they are seeing and although the BMW’s airbags deploy, the driver jumps out looking fine but overwhelmed by the shock.

Meanwhile, the Nissan turns right and continues around the corner along the inner circle before coming to a stop.

The person who shot the video can be heard saying “Oh my days” repeatedly, also in complete shock at what they just saw.

People were quick to mock the BMW in the comments.
