Shark attack on dolphin shuts down Sydney’s northern beaches

Hundreds of swimmers have been evacuated from the water after a dolphin was wounded by a shark near Manly on Sydney’s northern beaches.
Northern Beaches Council said lifeguards closed all beaches between Shelley Beach and Queenscliff Beach as a precaution following the attack on the dolphin and several shark sightings on Saturday morning.
The footage shows the dolphin struggling while swimming. Lifeguards and vets have been helping the injured animal on a beach packed with competitors for the Manly Surf Open.
A spokeswoman for the council said lifeguards would continue to monitor the situation and would reopen beaches when safe to do so.
