Pep Guardiola’s side went wild at the Etihad on Sunday, clinching a 4-1 win over their rivals to keep them on course for the Premier League title.
The manner of United’s performance under interim boss Ralf Rangnick has come under renewed scrutiny, with one particular second-half statistic providing damning evidence of their efforts.
In the final 15 minutes of the game, City played with their opponents, enjoying 92 percent possession as the visitors looked like they had knocked down tools.
United legend Neville says he was disgusted by what he saw as large numbers of United fans left the ground well before full-time.
“Possession was pretty even in the middle of the first half, which gave me the impression that this game was different than I imagined,” he told Sky Sports.
“The problem for United was on the right flank [Victor] Lindelof, [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka and [Anthony] Elanga. More Wan-Bissaka, really.
‘United’s system surprised them but City recovered the ball quicker in the transition in the second half. You just felt like City grew into the game and it became too much. They were just so much better from the first minute of the second half and the end of the game was just embarrassing for United.
“I don’t use that word lightly. The Manchester United players haven’t been taking care of their butts in the last 25 minutes. It was really awful. I have a lot of sympathy for the United players who have to play against this great Man City team at this moment.
“There are about 4,000 United fans in the back corner and by the end I think there were only about 1,000 left. I watched them go out minute by minute.
“I felt United didn’t react well to the third goal and I thought that wasn’t good at all. In fact, I was disgusted. I don’t know what happened to them. I couldn’t be tougher.
“I have accepted that Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola and their sides are exceptional and you can start to think ‘when are we going to win the league again?’
“But even under Louis van Gaal I never saw them give up. They gave up in the last 25 minutes.’
Things don’t get much easier for the Red Devils as they host Tottenham on Saturday before meeting Atletico Madrid in the second leg of the Champions League round of 16 on Tuesday.
