Services are set to be canceled from Monday, RTBU says
The NSW bus union has warned commuters in Sydney that thousands of bus services will be canceled from Monday as the state government flags driver shortages prompting operators to temporarily adjust their timetables.
In a statement Sunday morning, Peter Grech, president of the Rail, Tram and Bus Union NSW’s tram and bus division, said bus commuters should “prepare for chaos”.
“Starting Monday, over 100 bus driver shifts and thousands of bus trips will be canceled, including in Regions 6, 7, 8 and 9 – a move bus drivers say will result in huge queues and crowding along major thoroughfares,” he said the RTBU said.

Region 6 serves the Inner West and is privately operated by Transit Systems, Region 7 covers Ryde Borough and is operated by Busways, Region 8 extends along the Northern Beaches and is operated by Keolis Downer and Region 9 in the eastern suburbs will operated by Transdev Johann Holland.

Grech claimed the rides were being canceled because the state government “cannot provide the quality service that commuters deserve.”
“The NSW Government’s decision to privatize our buses was an absolute disaster,” he said.
“On top of all the other problems caused by privatization, they are now struggling to attract and retain bus drivers, which means operators are cutting hundreds of services every day.”
Grech claimed “incredibly large queues” could get worse as people return to work and school after recess.
