Server says table of 21 ‘church people’ only tipped her $10

A server says a group of 21 “church people” tipped her $10 after waiting an hour to order in a now viral two-part TikTok Storytime.

In the video posted by TikToker Shanell (@spotlightshanell) on March 5, she says the party initially asked for a table for 13, but then added more chairs as more people arrived, resulting in a party of 21 people in total led. She says they also chose to wait for the entire group to arrive before placing their order.

“Then they finally sat down and dared to rush me,” she says in the clip. “For example… if these people don’t tip me…”

In the second video, she shows the table’s receipt, which shows that they only tip her $10 on a $350 check, which is less than 3%.

In the comments, users discussed tipping etiquette, especially for larger parties.

“You don’t automatically tip 18% for parties with more than 6 people? Even if they gave you all $5 that would have been better,” wrote one commenter.

“After all, the $10 tip is WILD. He didn’t even give you a dollar per person you served,” said another.

“That’s why places automatically put in tips that are messed up,” added a third.

Other servers said they have had similar experiences with church groups coming in large groups after their service.

“Oh no! Check out EXACTLY why I don’t take the church groups. No, I don’t help either. That’s a no-brainer for,” said one user.

“I remember my first job, I looked forward to Sunday because I thought surely everyone would be so nice. My colleagues looked at me with pity, I was so naive,” wrote another.
