Serum Institute drops Covishield price to Rs. 225 per dose

As India prepares to give everyone over the age of 18 a precautionary dose of COVID-19 vaccines, vaccine makers Serum Institute of India (SII) and Bharat Biotech slashed the prices of their respective vaccines – Covishield and Covaxin – to Rs 225 per dose for private hospitals.

Adar Poonawalla, CEO of SII, announced the decision to lower the price of Covishield on Twitter. The price of the vaccine has been reduced from Rs 600 per dose to Rs 225 per dose for private hospitals.

“We are pleased to announce that after discussions with the Central Government, SII has decided to increase the price of the COVISHIELD vaccine for private hospitals from Rs 600 to Rs 225 per dose,” Poonawalla said in a tweet.

Meanwhile, Suchitra Ella, co-founder and joint managing director of Bharat Biotech, said the vaccine maker, in consultation with the central government, decided to lower the price of Covaxin to Rs. 225 per dose.

The government announced on Friday that the COVID-19 precautionary dose will be available from April 10 for everyone over the age of 18 in private vaccination centers. Anyone older than 18 years of age who is nine months after receiving the second dose is eligible for a caution dose.
