Senate Confirms Jessica Rosenworcel To New Term At FCC

Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Jessica Rosenworcel was confirmed for another term on Tuesday following a 68-31 vote in the Senate.

In a statement on Twitter, Rosenworcel thanked President Joe Biden and the Senate for strengthening her role at the agency.

“It’s been the honor of my life to lead @FCC and serve as the first female Permanent Chairman,” she wrote. “Thank you to the President and the Senate for entrusting me with this responsibility. Much has to be done to ensure modern communications reach everyone, everywhere. Now let’s start it. ”

Rosenworcel, who has served as president since the start of the Biden administration, has addressed many issues including net neutrality, robot calland advocates closing the “homework gap” or students who do not have access to affordable high-speed Internet.

The confirmation was welcomed by many lawmakers including Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), who described Rosenworcel as a much-needed force to close the digital divide.

“Jessica Rosenworcel will be a great leader at the FCC as we work to deliver the connectivity goals our 21st century economy demands,” she said in a statement. “I am confident that she has the expertise needed to close the digital divide and strengthen our nation for generations to come. I am proud to endorse her nomination and I am delighted that she will be the first female chair of the FCC. I look forward to working with her.”

Senator Ed Markey (D-Mass.) also praised Rosenworcel as “a tireless advocate for consumer protection in today’s digital landscape”.

“More than ever, the FCC needs a president who understands the importance of network neutrality and the critical protections for broadband users, and I know Chairman Rosenworcel will take up the charge,” he said. this. “She understands that broadband access is an essential convenience for millions of small businesses, communities and students, and has long partnered with me in addressing the ‘homework gap’ ‘ to make sure every student has an internet connection to complete homework.”

Rosenworcel was nominated by Biden along with Gigi Sohn, a staunch advocate of pure neutrality, who continues to face opposition from some Republican lawmakers. Sohn there was a confirmation hearing last week.

The FCC remained in a 2-2 partisan deadlock even with Rosenworcel’s confirmation, after Biden took months to announce his plans to fill the agency.

If Sohn is confirmed, Democrats will secure a 3-2 majority. The Senate needs to confirm Rosenworcel quickly. Her term technically ended last year, but the rules allow her to continue serving until January. Had they not confirmed her by then, the FCC would have fallen into a 2-1 Republican majority.
