Selwyn Cobbo Podcast Sleds by Kevin Walters, Instagram, Broncos

The Brisbane Broncos’ off-season from hell took another turn when 2022 breakout star Selwyn Cobbo was forced to apologize to coach Kevin Walters over damaging claims in a podcast.

Cobbo sparked another firestorm at Red Hill with his brutal assessment of Walters in a social media podcast that resurfaced Sunday morning after first being taped in October.

The Cobbo comments came just weeks after former Broncos playmaker Tyson Gamble also questioned Walters’ coaching abilities and last year claimed Brisbane players sought advice from skipper Adam Reynolds.

The 20-year-old was asked if he thought Walters was a good manager or not. Though the host said, “You don’t need to answer that,” Cobbo offered a surprising assessment.

“I think he’s a good person,” said Cobbo.

“He’s a good person, like a good guy, but I don’t think he’s a good coach. He’s not the best coach, but he’s okay.

“I feel like he’s just a good person, but I don’t think he’s a coach. Even though he’s seen footy, been in all the big finals and all that, I feel like he’s not a coach.

“But he’s a good person, a good guy and does a lot for the club. But the way he trains is a bit strange I think. But he is a good person. He’s a good coach.”

But Cobbo has since backtracked on his feelings, calling Walters and personally apologizing to the Broncos coach, claiming he made a tongue-in-cheek reference to Gamble’s assessment instead.

“Today’s article about a podcast I did last year was taken out of context,” Cobbo said in a Broncos statement.

“It was two guys talking and joking about silly things like the comments Tyson had made about Kev.

“The fact of the matter is that Kev is a very good coach, as are all of our coaches in the Broncos. I was lucky enough to play Origin for Queensland last year and that goes back to the coaching of Kev and his team.

“Kev has taught me a lot since joining the NRL squad and has been a great support as I have adjusted to the professionalism of NRL.

“I was late for practice a few times and instead of cutting me he raised me and supported me.

“When I was feeling burnt out at the end of the year, Kev rested me and when he thought I was ready he gave me more responsibility.

“I have already contacted Kev to apologize and I would like to extend that to his family and the entire Broncos club for this undue attention due to some stupid comments I made.”

Despite Cobbo’s apology, his initial comments will raise questions about whether Walters will lose the dressing room after failing to guide Brisbane to the final last year, highlighted by their dramatic late-season collapse when they plummeted from fourth to ninth place.

Walters is out of contract this year and will need a finals campaign to secure his tenure at Red Hill for 2024 and beyond.

Cobbo inked a new extension back in June last year to stay at Red Hill at least until the end of the 2025 season.
