Visitors to a Scottish holiday home were asked to search for Gandalf during their stay.

Isobel Haldane was shocked when her nieces sent her a picture of the legendary wizard’s face gazing at her from the floorboards of The Roundhouse Cottage in Blackford, Perthshire.

The unusual wooden knots on the living room floor appear to depict Gandalf’s head, eyes, nose, mouth, beard and flowing hair, complete with a pointed hat.

Some think the image bears an almost uncanny resemblance to Sir Ian McKellen’s character, based on JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings novels.

Isobel, 60, said: “It is very special to have one of the greatest wizards in literary history in our living room, we feel very privileged.

“His distinctive facial features are reflected in the wood – two distinct eyes, a prominent nose, and the flowing hair and beard.

“The beard is just amazing. Even more amazing is that the people we brought property from didn’t notice. I think it may have been covered by a carpet.

“It’s a bit difficult to find, but it’s a good challenge. If you look at him upside down you cannot see him, only if you look at him you can see him.”

She said guests love tracking down the 16-inch long portrait in the circular room, and a bachelorette party said they would make a return visit after not finding it.

Isobel, who is married to 74-year-old John, said her nieces Jane Hamilton and Annie Smart first discovered it when they visited the property three years ago.

The mother-of-three, who bought the property six years ago, said: “Jane and Annie spotted it, we didn’t even know it was there.

“Jane said to me, ‘Do you know that Gandalf lives here?’ We didn’t even know it was there.

“We took a picture and laminated it and made a puzzle out of it so kids can figure out who’s there.

“I found it interesting and something to keep them busy.

“When parents arrive on holiday and enter the house, the children are itching to go and look for Gandalf while they unpack.

“Some people ask for a lead, so I tell people to text me if they want a lead.”

She joked that if she did visit him, she wouldn’t rest until she tracked him down.

“It’s the first thing I would look for, I wouldn’t let my kids go to bed until we found it,” added Isobel.
