An elderly man and woman have died in a crash in the Scottish Borders and another person remains injured.

A 79-year-old driving a red Kia Venga and his 85-year-old passenger died at the scene of the accident on the A697 near Lauder.

The accident happened around 4:30 p.m. yesterday.

A female driver driving a blue Kia Sportage that was also involved in the collision was taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

The road was closed for seven hours while the investigation was ongoing.

Police Scotland Road Sergeant Kosmas Papakyriakou said: “Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of those involved in this incident.

“Our inquiries are ongoing to determine what happened and we are appealing to anyone who was on the A697 at this time and saw the accident or a vehicle on the road beforehand to get in touch.

“I would also ask drivers with dashcam footage who have been in the area to get in touch if they think they can help.”
