After Arctic snow and ice blasts closed more than 150 schools in southern and western England, Wales and Scotland this week. Due to the persistent minus temperatures, it could be more today.

The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for snow and ice across much of the country, while drivers have been warned of treacherous conditions on the roads.

The coldest night of the year was even recorded earlier this week and cool temperatures are set to continue.

One of the biggest impacts bad weather can have is school closures, leaving parents with last-minute alternative plans to make.

While everyone loved a snow day at school, closures can disrupt work and force changes in childcare schedules.

So how can you find out if your child’s school is closed today?

The easiest way to check if schools are open is to go to the municipality’s website.

However, your school’s website and social media may also be able to provide you with up-to-date information.

In Scotland you can search Emergency school closures on the mygov.scot website.

In Northern Ireland visit the nidirect website.

The decision about When schools close usually depends on the inside temperature as well as how dangerous the location is, since lots of snow and ice can pose a risk of injury.

Gov.uk states: “Schools must follow the same indoor temperature health and safety laws as other workplaces.”

There is currently no legal minimum or maximum, although the lowest recommended temperature (for non-physical work) is 16°C.
