England women’s manager Sarina Wiegman believes her side weren’t at their best in the Euro 2022 win against Austria, but she’s happy with the win nonetheless.

In the tournament’s opening game, the Drei Löwinnen defeated Austria 1-0, with Beth Mead scoring the decisive goal in the 16th minute of the game.

It wasn’t the best display from the hosts, however, who struggled against a stubborn Austrian side and while creating some great chances a lack of ruthlessness prevented England from extending their lead.

Speaking to BBC Sport after the game, Wiegman said: “I’m not frustrated. I just think we can do better.

“We had a huge chance after the first goal. In the final phase we have to calm down a bit. We should have scored a few times and made it easier.

“The first game in a tournament, it’s so important to win and get off to a good start. We have shown different phases – some good, some not so good.

“We didn’t start very well. We did a lot better [then]. We created chances in the second half, but were too sloppy with the ball.”

Wiegman led the Netherlands to victory at the last European Championship in 2017 and has not lost a game since taking over from England last September. This is her 13th win in 15 games.

The game was played at Old Trafford to a roaring crowd of 68,000, a record attendance for the Women’s Euros.

Wiegman added: “Overall I’m really happy. Don’t underestimate Austria. They are a good, highly organized team.

‘It [the atmosphere] was so amazing. It’s hard to influence because the players can’t hear you. But that is exactly what we want.”

England’s EURO 2022 campaign resumes with their next Group A game against Norway on Monday.
