Sardines and sandstone buildings: Summer in Sydney

Anywhere near the water in Ku Ring Gai National Park like Coal and Candle Creek is a good choice. The modest entrance fee to the park (a season pass is a good investment) and weekday visits improve chances of solitude.
The best summer food is…
Fresh sardines from Sydney Fish Market smoking on the grill.

I know it’s summer when I smell…

My favorite summer song is…
I will sail this ship alone by Beautiful South needs some beating. It reminds me of the times I played it very loud on my 1950’s wooden gaff rigger (now sold) in Pittwater. The Kinks sunny afternoon is pretty good too.
The worst thing about summer is…
I’m trying to remember that Christmas is summer and my birthday (July) is now winter. I used to stamp on frozen puddles and skate (not very well) on frozen lakes as a kid in January and February. Seeing inflatable snowmen in the heat is weird to say the least.
My nearest out-of-town hideout is…
It’s not really close, but the scenery around Oberon (better known for its snow) is stunning. I go there not to catch a lot of trout, both rainbow and brown.
Guilty Pleasure?
A car port. There is little joy in returning with the weekend shop to your Victorian semi-detached house in London to find that not only is there no parking space in front of your house, but there is none on the street either.
What aspect of summer life would you change and what would you like to stay the same?
I would reduce noise by banning leaf blowers on Sunday afternoons. What should always remain the same are the beautiful sandstone public buildings on Macquarie Street – the perfect escape on a hot summer’s day.
