San Diego Police Department is launching a series of security patrols in Mira Mesa

SAN DIEGO — San Diego Police and Council Member Chris Cate began a series of security walks in Mira Mesa on Wednesday amid an increase in crime and violence in the area.

The walk took place at the Village at Mira Mesa shopping center, where police officers and community leaders went from store to store and interacted with dozens of businesses and residents.

“For me, it’s really about community policing, it’s about being an officer,” Chief David Nisleit said.

Councilor Cate, who represents the area, was also there to make connections.

“Let them know what resources are available, how to report crimes, how to give us tips, and what we can do to protect our neighborhoods,” Cate said.

At a time when crime was on the rise across the region, the goal was to connect the community not only with their local leaders and law enforcement, but also with resource groups.

“To raise awareness that help is available. You don’t have to be alone when facing domestic violence. We’re here for you,” said ICNA Relief’s Jamilah Granza.

The San Diego Police Department held several similar walks in 2021 that focused on hate crime victims and areas with higher reports of violence, but the work continues.

“Hate crime is still a big problem in the city and we want to address that,” Nisleit said. “But this is also about our ability to get out there and meet new friends to address concerns, whether it’s about homelessness issues, car break-ins, theft, drugs, whatever it is.”

The safety hikes will continue in May and June. Upcoming communities include Hillcrest and Gaslamp.
