Samantha Kerr is ‘raging’ for Matilda’s success in Australia

Matildas captain Sam Kerr has revealed the pressure and excitement of preparing for this year’s Women’s World Cup in Australia and what it’s like to partner with another international star, USA’s Kristie Mewis.

Tuesday’s unveiling of the World Cup ball with a helicopter stunt on Bondi Beach was a reminder that the finals are now less than six months away.

Until then, Kerr has one season left in the English league and Europe with Chelsea, and Mewis has one season left in the US league, starting in New York with Gotham FC.

“We’re just raging for the next six months leading up to the World Cup and doing what we can,” Kerr said.

“We both feel like we’ve been shooting for this World Cup for so long that it’s going to be like we’re just giving it our all over the next six months and then it’s going to be like a breath of fresh air.”

In conversation with the English lifestyle magazine gaffer The West Australian continued: “It’s so stressful with a tournament coming up, an injury, staying fit, being included in the team, the pressure of a World Cup at home, the pressure of being in shape, all those things that come with a World Championship.

“It’s been under construction for two years now. I think we’re both excited and just want to be there and do whatever it takes to perform there. So I guess it’s like anger for the next six months. Then you can take a deep breath.”

Kerr has been unable to come home for more than two years during the pandemic and has enjoyed being able to return ever since, whether on breaks or for internationals. She is next in Australia for games against Spain, Jamaica and the Czech Republic next month.
