Salisbury community supports local Boys and Girls Club with fundraiser after June burglary – Boston News, Weather, Sports

SALISBURY, MASS. (WHDH) – The Salisbury community came together over the weekend to help a local boys and girls club which was raided last month.

Dozens of people turned out for a fundraiser in aid of the club on Sunday, a month after one or more thieves broke into the Lower Merrimack Valley Boys and Girls Club.

“The donations have been amazing and we couldn’t ask for anything better,” said Gil Medeiros, chairman of Salisbury Community TV.

Salisbury Community TV has partnered with Uncle Eddie’s Oceanside Tavern to host the event with the aim of raising money to help the club rebuild.

After the June burglary, windows were smashed, safes blown up and offices vandalized. Those behind it were able to make off with thousands of dollars, replica Celtics and Patriots championship rings, GoPro cameras and bursary money set aside.

According to program director Katie Beal, the burglary also left behind a sense of unease that was felt even by the children who benefit from the club.

“They broke into their safe space where they feel at home,” Beal said. “They feel like if they can break into their safe area at the club, they can break into their house too.”

Beal said the club has been double-checking its doors and windows to make sure they are locked since the break-in. For her, Sunday was an opportunity to forget the negative and focus on the importance of a club that means so much to her.

“I was a club kid growing up in my hometown, I was a fellow, in a single parent home — I’ve seen firsthand what boys’ and girls’ clubs do for families,” she told 7NEWS.

Sunday’s fundraiser included live music, 40 raffle items donated and an exhibition highlighting Salisbury’s commitment to the club.

“This community always comes together,” Medeiros said. “We had a fire down the road here not long ago and we came out as a community. Here in Salisbury we all try to stick together in situations like this.”

The Boys and Girls Club told 7NEWS that police are still investigating the burglary and that they have a few people interested in the case.
