STATE HOUSE, BOSTON, JUNE 13, 2022….. Lawmakers Monday set the dates for this year’s sales tax holiday weekend, set for August 13-14, when Massachusetts shoppers will take a break from state sales tax get less than $2,500 on most retail items.
The annual sales tax-free weekend was made permanent by a 2018 law that requires lawmakers to set the dates by June 15 each year, or the Treasury Department decides otherwise.
In 2018, as part of the “Grand Bargain” law, retailers dropped their push for a ballot that cut sales tax from 6.25 percent to 5 percent. This law also raised the minimum wage, which will rise from $11 to $15 an hour over five years, phased out Sunday and holiday pay for workers over the same period, and introduced a paid wage that solidified family and a sick leave program overseen by the state government and supported by a payroll tax.
Economic Development Committee co-chairs Sen. Eric Lesser and Rep. Jerry Parisella sponsored date-setting actions in their respective branches Monday.
Ahead of the Senate vote, Minority Leader Bruce Tarr said the Legislature was “proactive” and had set the date, but he found it “regrettable” that no further steps had been taken on tax breaks.
“While we’re here to get at least two days of sales tax breaks, I hope that with the time left in this session we’ll consider extending this sales tax holiday,” Tarr said, “as one of the best ways to do that.” able to provide tax breaks to the citizens of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts who are watching these debates and wondering – repeatedly – if we have billions of dollars in surplus and fund all our accounts properly, then why is that? we don’t find the ability to build consensus to offer substantial, responsible tax breaks?”
The vacation does not true to purchase certain goods or services: automobiles, motor boats, meals, alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, marijuana products, telecommunications services such as prepaid calling, natural gas, steam or electricity.
