Sadio Mane agreed to join Manchester United before Jurgen Klopp picked up the phone, convinced his future lay with Liverpool.

The Senegalese international will face Real Madrid in his second Champions League final in three years on Saturday night, while Liverpool are looking to lift a third trophy this season after already lifting the FA Cup and League Cup.

Mane has won six trophies during his time at Merseyside and has established himself as one of Europe’s top strikers, having joined from Southampton for £34million in 2016.

Liverpool weren’t the only interested side at the time, United had also accepted an offer. Louis van Gaal, who was replaced by Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford this summer, was a huge admirer, leading United’s hunt for his signature in the months leading up to his departure.

But after receiving a call from Klopp, who had previously tried to sign him for Borussia Dortmund, Mane had no hesitation in turning down Old Trafford for Anfield.

“I have to say I was really close to joining Manchester United,” Mane told Jamie Carragher in an interview for The Telegraph.

“I had the contract then. I had agreed everything. Everything was ready, but instead I thought, ‘No, I want to go to Liverpool’. I was convinced of Klopp’s project. I still remember the first time I got the call from Klopp.

‘I was watching TV. It was an action film – because I love films – and he said: ‘Sadio, listen, I want to explain what happened in Dortmund’. Then he thought about signing me for Dortmund and for some reason it didn’t work out. He tried to explain and I said, “It’s okay, it happened”. I have forgiven him.

“Then he said: ‘Now I want you in Liverpool. And I said: ‘Okay, Dortmund is behind us, let’s focus on the future’.

“He said: ‘We have a big project in Liverpool and I want you to be a part of it. Then he asked what position I wanted because he could see I played on the right flank in Southampton and used to play on the left flank. I said I prefer left and then he said: ‘But Coutinho is on the left!’ So I said never mind, I’ll play right. I could see myself in all positions.’
