Italian Air Force jets were grounded early this morning after four Russian fighter jets were spotted.

They were caught entering the “flight information area” of Poland and Sweden without permission.

The fighters took off from Kaliningrad, a Russian enclave on mainland Europe, and were “forced to return,” a statement said.

Apparently, they flew over the Baltic Sea, which borders Kaliningrad to the north, and entered an area controlled by Poland and Sweden.

The Italian Air Force, which is involved in air policing activities in Poland, said it had initiated an “immediate start”.

It said the Russian fighter jets “entered first Polish and then Swedish airspace before being forced to return to Kaliningrad airspace.”

A later statement said the scramble was “ordered due to Russian jets flying over international waters within the Polish and Swedish flight information region”.
