Strictly Come Dancing star Rose Ayling-Ellis has teamed up with Barbie to introduce her first doll with behind-the-ear hearing aids.
The EastEnders actress, who won the dance competition in 2021, is part of the Rose, Barbie & Friends campaign.
She is photographed alongside a variety of models representing the new line of dolls, including the first Ken doll with vitiligo, a Barbie with a prosthetic limb and another in a wheelchair.
Rose, who has been deaf since birth, said: “It’s so important that children can see themselves represented in the toys they play with.
“When I was little, I put hearing aids on my Barbie dolls to make them look like me. That’s why I’m thrilled that Mattel is releasing more dolls that encourage children to celebrate and embrace their differences.”
Rose’s Barbie, who sports a high brunette ponytail and wears a floral mini dress and chunky pink boots, also has pink hearing aids, of course.
Mattel consulted with experts on the dolls to accurately represent the hearing aids.
The educational audiologist Dr. Jen Richardson said she was honored to work on the line.
“It inspires those who suffer from hearing loss and it reflects in a doll,” she said.
“I’m so excited that my young patients can see and play with a doll that looks like them.”
Since joining the EastEnders cast in 2020, Rose has broken down barriers between the hearing and the deaf and achieved many ‘firsts’.
She was the first deaf character to use British Sign Language (BSL) in Albert Square, as well as the first deaf contestant to appear on Strictly.
Her touching silent routine with partner Giovanni Pernice also won the 2022 Bafta award for Must-See Moment of the Year.
She was also the first celebrity to use BSL to read a CBeebies bedtime story.
The latest additions to the Barbie Fashionistas line, in which the Barbie brand offers its greatest diversity and inclusion, are available in the UK from Thursday.
