Roman Abramovich has released a statement after reaching a definitive agreement to sell the club to the consortium led by Todd Boehly.

Earlier this year, Russia was stripped of its possession of the West London club after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

It was announced this week that American billionaire Boehly will take over the club with immediate effect.

Abramovich, who was at Chelsea for almost 20 years and oversaw the huge success, says it’s an honor to own the Blues.

He said: “It has been almost three months since I announced my intention to sell Chelsea FC. During that time the team have worked hard to find the right Chelsea FC manager who will be best positioned to successfully lead the club into its next chapter.

“Owning this club comes with a lot of responsibility. Since joining Chelsea almost twenty years ago I have seen first hand what this club can achieve.

“My aim was to ensure the next owner had a mindset that would enable the success of both the men’s and women’s teams, as well as the will and motivation to continue developing other key aspects of the club, such as the academy and the vital work of the Chelsea Foundation.

‘I am pleased that this search has now come to a successful conclusion. As I hand Chelsea over to their new stewards, I want to wish them every success on and off the pitch.

“It has been a lifetime honor to be part of this club – I would like to thank all past and current players, staff and of course fans of the club for these incredible years.

“I am proud that our joint successes will now benefit millions of people from the newly established charitable foundation. This is the legacy we created together. Many Thanks.’

Earlier on Saturday, Chelsea released a statement confirming they had reached a “final and final” agreement with the Boehly-led consortium, while the deal is expected to close on Monday.

A statement said: “Chelsea Football Club can confirm that a final and definitive agreement was reached last night to sell the club to the Todd Boehly/Clearlake Capital consortium.

‘The transaction is expected to close on Monday. The club will provide further updates at this time.’
