Rivervale Primary School bans walkers from the oval after a student accidentally sat in dog poo

The principal of a southern suburban elementary school was forced to close his school’s oval to the public after one of his students accidentally sat in dog poo.

Rivervale Primary School principal Mark Burns took to local Belmont Community Vibes Facebook page Monday to announce his decision.

“Hello, I am sorry to report that the Rivervale Primary School Oval is closed to dog walkers until further notice,” Mr Burns wrote.

“I know the regulars have tried so hard to do the right thing, but unfortunately it’s not working. I’m happy to chat with anyone who has a solution.

“As previously mentioned, we love the sense of community when the oval is used, but cannot continue like this for the benefit and safety of our students.”

Mr Burns told PerthNow the response to his post was overwhelming and “99.9 per cent positive”.

He said it’s sad he had to take the action because the school is a big part of the community and the oval has a “great feel” and “hundreds of people” are enjoying it.

Residents on Facebook said a few spoiled it for everyone.

“It’s always the actions of a few that screw up the rest,” said Zeke Ferret.

“Agree, the health and safety of children must come first,” said Noams Holmes.

“Very disappointing Mark, but I totally agree with your decision,” said Jay Lee. “This is our daily place and is enjoyed by many in the community.

“Once again, the minority is ruining it for the majority.”

“Good. I would go crazy if dogs were allowed on my kids’ school grounds,” Smith Hji said.

“I would also like to know where the whole regular group will be moving to so my dogs can still see their friends every day.”

“Awhh. That sucks. Always a few that spoil it,” said Aly Winter.

“It must have been a difficult decision, but what an inconvenience to the poor parents who had to come and fetch their child.”

“Bayswater has a designated dog area, is there one in Belmont?” said Matt White.

“Yes, I need an easily accessible fenced area for dogs,” said Sylvia Forsyth. “Farm yards are shrinking with new construction and dog owners[are looking]for a place where the dogs can stretch their legs and socialize.”
