Marcus Rashford remains a cause for concern for Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand, who believes his poor form is a sign of more trouble behind the scenes.

Rashford had another day in a United shirt to forget when he started the game on Saturday but was substituted after 64 minutes in the 1-0 defeat by Everton at Goodison Park.

The England international has not scored in a competition since scoring the winner against West Ham on January 22 and his future at Old Trafford has been called into question.

His contract with the Red Devils expires next year and after what has been a rather dismal season so far, United could look to capitalize on him this summer, which Ferdinand thinks must hamper his performances.

Ferdinand sees the interim manager situation with Ralf Rangnick, Rashford’s contract and the general malaise surrounding the club as difficult for the striker.

“He left me worried and I ask a lot of questions about what’s going on behind the scenes. Sagging shoulders, not so confident,” Ferdinand said on BT Sport.

“I don’t think he can hide it with his body language. He wants some success back at the club. The uncertainty with the manager and his contract.’

The 24-year-old has scored just four Premier League goals this season and Rangnick has already said if Rashford wants to leave in the summer then he can.

“I don’t think that’s a problem and he never said anything about it when we spoke yesterday. But again, the window is closed right now,” Rangnick said of Rashford in March.

“Even supposing he and his agents or his family think about maybe going to another club sometime in the summer, well then he can do that, but in the summer.”

The loss to Everton left United’s four best hopes in tatters and they were seventh in the table and six points behind Spurs in fourth after Saturday’s action.

Spurs are now on pole for fourth place in the Champions League, with their overwhelming win over Aston Villa and Arsenal’s defeat by Brighton giving Antonio Conte’s men the advantage.
