The England international’s future has been the subject of intense speculation and a departure from Ellan Road seems inevitable, especially if Leeds suffer what appears to be an increasingly inevitable relegation.
United have been heavily linked with a move for the 26-year-old as new manager Erik ten Hag was keen to bolster a midfield that is likely to lose Paul Pogba’s services, while Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard are sure to leave.
Leeds to Man Utd move
Joe Jordan – 1978, £350,000
Gordon McQueen – 1978, £500,000
Arthur Graham 1983 £65,000
Eric Cantona -1992, £1,200,000
Rio Ferdinand – 2002, £29,100,000
Alan Smith – 2004, £7,000,000
However, only six players have ever moved from Leeds to United, including Ferdinand, and none since Alan Smith’s controversial move in the summer of 2004 after the Yorkshire club were eliminated from the Premier League.
However, Ferdinand believes Phillips’ circumstances are drastically different from the scenario he faced in 2002 when he moved to Old Trafford for a then-record £29million.
He told his Vibe with Five YouTube channel: “I don’t think Kalvin Phillips is a name that should be associated with Manchester United.
‘I just think he’s a Leeds boy. The rivalry between fans, he’s family are all there. It’s different than when I left, I didn’t have any family in Leeds apart from my cousin.
“It wasn’t a problem for her. It was very different. I don’t see Kalvin Phillips moving to Manchester United. If he does, it will be the biggest surprise.’
