Erling Haaland will likely have to go through an adjustment period when he arrives at Manchester City and may “suppress any ego” to get through, reckons Rio Ferdinand.

The Norwegian striker joins the Etihad from Borussia Dortmund, while the Premier League champions add another world-class talent to their incredible squad.

The 21-year-old has quickly established himself as one of the most feared forwards in the world and is hoping to take another step under Pep Guardiola at City.

Few doubt Haaland will be a huge success, but it is accepted that it could take time for the striker to adapt to Guardiola’s unique methods and make the most of the role he is set to play.

This has happened to City stars under the Spaniard in the past and Ferdinand says Haaland needs to keep his ego in check, accept that things may not be perfect from the start and is willing to learn to adapt.

“There might be an embedding period where we don’t immediately see the Haaland that we’re expecting,” Ferdinand said on Vibe with FIVE.

“What Pep had with City, when big players came in they got an adjustment period. It’s an understanding: It’s tough, you don’t always get down to earth.

“Most of that is the humility of the players that fight. They don’t moan or make a fuss. Haaland has to do his part if things don’t go smoothly. Suppress any ego…the big picture doesn’t upset team morale.’

Bernardo Silva is a player who took his time to settle down at City, while Joao Cancelo also failed to shine from the start. Jack Grealish is another who hasn’t really caught the eye since his £100m move from Aston Villa last year, but Ferdinand reckons he will be in top form next season.

‘He [Grealish] told me that there is still so much to consider going into a team prepared by Pep Guardiola,” said Ferdinand.

“Give him a year, he probably understands better now. So next season we’re going to see the Jack we know can be.
