Terry Young, 61, was “incredulous” when she learned she had won a whopping £396,694 in the People’s Postcode Lottery

Residents on a south London street celebrate after winning £1million in the new People’s Postcode Lottery jackpot.

Two people who had tickets in the winning postcode – CR4 4AG – received £396,694 each, while a further 331 people in the CR4 4 postcode area shared the remaining £202,612.

Former nurse Terry Young, 61, was one of the two big winners in the Millionaire Street raffle, which launched last month and sees £1million shared by a postcode every Saturday.

Terry, who lives in a loft in Mitcham, said: “I signed up for the People’s Postcode Lottery because they wanted to help charities.”

“I’m in disbelief that I won and I’m not sure what I’m going to do with the money yet.”

One of the first things she had to do was tell her younger sister, Janet Neale, who lives downstairs but hadn’t bought a ticket, that she had won.

Terry couldn’t wait to break the good news to her sister Janet and has started planning some home renovations and a trip to Canada

Happy for her sister, mum-of-two Janet, 60, said: “This is great for Terry.” I can’t believe it’s that much money – I thought it was only around £10,000.

“When the postcode lottery came to the door, I figured it would be people who would show up with the new carpet I ordered.

“I never knew Terry had joined the Postcode Lottery – I wish I had, and I will now.”

Terry said she plans to spend some of her profits on her sister, niece and nephew. She and her sister live at the end of a terraced house that her grandfather bought almost 100 years ago and later converted into two apartments by her father.

Now she plans to spend some of the money on renovating her apartment and possibly on a trip to Canada.

She said, “I’m going to have the apartment decorated.” I’m in the process of getting a brand new kitchen and I’ve packed everything – I can’t move because of the boxes.

After working as a nurse with the NHS, she shared how the money will help her retire comfortably and financially

“Maybe I’ll go to Canada too and visit some relatives I’ve never met.”

Terry worked as a nurse for the NHS before working on an IT project for the NHS before quitting in April.

She said the win would give her financial security in retirement.

“It means I don’t have to go back to work.” “I just retired and it will help with my retirement.”

She was one of two residents to win the maximum single prize and the remaining winners in the wider postcode area, some with two or three tickets, won £546 per ticket.

Postcode Lottery ambassador Jeff Brazier, who surprised Terry on her doorstep with the check for nearly £400,000, said: “The sun was shining on the gold envelope as I presented it to Terry.”

“This was my first time on Millionaire Street and it’s a really amazing prize.”

“Making people happy and telling them they’ll continue to support charities is still the best way to start the day.”
