WORCESTER, MASS. (WHDH) – A 32-unit apartment building in Worcester has been evacuated after much of the roof collapsed on Friday.
According to officials, it was likely that the roof could not support the weight of the roofing materials resting on it.
“It just can’t be allowed to happen,” said one resident. “If I had been standing under that opening when it happened, I would have been very hurt.”
Residents poured out of the building around 9:30 a.m. with stacks and bundles of belongings. Some reported that seconds before the ceiling collapsed, water spurted out of their lamps.
Inspection services were later called to the scene to ensure the building was safe for first responders to enter and evacuate any pets left behind.
No timetable was given for when residents might be able to re-enter their homes.
